Truth as Person

A good post by Huw.  I’m thinking a lot about the lessons for this coming week, and there’s a fair amount of talk about the Spirit in there.

If God is Truth and God is a Person (or Three) then God is knowable in a personal way.  We can know Truth relationally, but the Truth is not the relationship established.

On the sermon note, can anybody with a good New Testament commentary handy help me out with an interpretation of the following lines from John:

1:45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.”

1:46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

1:47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!”

It seems that Jesus is calling Nathanael out, essentially saying, “You say what you think when you think it” or “I know what you said about Nazareth.”

But most commentaries seems to gloss right over it.

Sacra Pagina refers the reader back to v.41. Do the disciples understand who Jesus is? Even they get it wrong at first. v.44, states the commentary, is a play on language asking the same question from v.41. And v.47 is all about Nathanael’s frankness(cf. Ps32:2; Isa.53:9).

    So, um, hope that helps.
