Friday Five: What are you doing for Lent?

8 February 2008

1. Did you celebrate Mardi Gras and/or Ash Wednesday this week? How?
Both, like a champ.  For Mardi Gras I had an Italian Combo (that’s Italian beef with an Italian sausage inside, for non-initiates) for lunch and then a pepperoni pizza for dinner plus a couple of beers.  For Ash Wednesday I prayed the Hours and went to the Eucharist.

2. What was your most memorable Mardi Gras/Ash Wednesday/Lent?
Not sure I’ve really had a memorable one, unfortunately.

3. Did you/your church/your family celebrate Lent as a child? If not, when and how did you discover it?
Yes, I’ve observed Lent my whole life.  Even when I was more or less away from the Church I was aware of it.  As a kid we’d go to Church with our school.

4. Are you more in the give-up camp, or the take-on camp, or somewhere in between?
I believe in both practices, honestly.  Take something on and give something up.  This year, I did my New Year’s resolutions so late that I’m counting them toward “taking things on.”

5. How do you plan to keep Lent this year?

    1. Abstaining from meat on all days but Sundays.
    2. Fast on Wednesdays and Fridays.
    3. No alcohol during the week.
    4. Read something of spiritual significance.
    5. Pray the Hours with increased focus and discipline.

Good play! May all the Lenten practices bear fruit for you and bring you inner freedom.
