Considering Advent Disciplines

8 November 2007

Next week, on the 15th Eastern Advent —more accurately known as “Christmas Lent” or “Christmas Fast”— begins.  Two short weeks later, the Western observance of the time of preparation for Christmas begins.  Aside from finalizing plans for gifts and celebrations, I also like to think about what I am going to do for Advent.  Here are my initial proposals:

  1. Abstaining from Meat.
  2. Fasting on Wednesdays and Fridays
  3. Reading The Ladder of Diving Ascent by John Climacus.
  4. Beginning some kind of regular (weekly or bi-weekly) service opportunity.  Perhaps spending some time working at Care for Real or at All Saints’ community kitchen.
  5. Figuring out how to better balance care for myself with work, household, and family responsibilities.

  1. Mother Laura Says:

Wow, you’re doing more for Advent than some people (including me some years) do for Lent. Hope that the disciplines are a source of grace and joy, and balance in well with everything else you’re juggling.

  2. I’m doing a lot, but 1 and 2 are easy for me, 3 is fun, and 4 and 5 are the real challenges. In other words, the real challenge will be getting off my duff and start volunteering as well as finding a little quiet space to really think about self-care.
