Blending Offices, an Update

3 October 2007

The numbering of Psalms is exceedingly confusing, especially when you have before you a Breviary that uses the LXX numbering, the BCP Psalter which uses Hebrew numbering, and the BDP which uses both(?!).

That said, I’m more than halfway through figuring out a “blended” office that will take the Benedictine psalter, hymnody, and collects, and then use the ordinary, canticles, and the rest of it from BCP.  I’m not sure how much I’ll end up using it, but as a budding liturgist and lay monastic, it’s probably a good idea.

I’ve figured out Morning Prayer Week 1 and Week 4, and I’m working my way toward the middle, figuring it’ll be easier to add, subtract, move, or consolidate psalms in the middle of the cycle than at the end, since the MP psalm schema ends in the low 100s (108 or s0), and with a bunch of long psalms in a row.

Thumbs up, signs of the Cross, and other encouragements to you, a kindred spirit, in this project…From a fellow admirer of many offices!

  3. That’s really helpful, lukacs. I’m pressing ahead with my attempt to at least construct something that keeps unites both the BCP daily office and the Benedictine schema. Still, I’ll likely buy that Monastic Breviary soon.

And thank you, Scott for your prayers and well wishes.
