Toward Oblation: An Update
1 May 2007
I met this morning with Sr. Benita Coffey, Oblate Director and Sub-Prioress of St. Scholastica Monastery. We spoke a bit and it was clear to her that I had spent time thinking about Benedictinism, the Rule, and what they mean for daily life.
We spoke and discerned that what I need from Oblate life is the support of a nearby community of Benedictines, their prayers, and some guidance when it comes to lectio divina.
She gave me some lectio pointers, and we discussed the history and character of this particular Benedictine community. I also received a standing invitation to pray with them in their chapel. That pantocrator-type icon is in the apse of the chapel, a modest place but quite beautiful, with icons of Mary, Joseph, Gertrude, Hildegaard, and many other saints. It is quite a beautiful space, and I hope to join [the nuns for prayer] soon.

I might be doomed to hell (thank Benedict there’s no more limbo). On bad days I call that icon – Christ the Procrastinator. Of course, I’m currently Presbyterian and until I was 8, I thought we had our own crosswalks.
