On a lighter and slightly blasphemous note, I have before me a steaming 2-ounce cup of Jamaican Blue Mountain AA-grade coffee, roasted by the good folks here at Metropolis on Granville Avenue in Chicago.

Free two-ounce samples are available now out of a big, gold coffee urn by Metropolis’s front door; I assume the urn will be there until it’s empty. Metropolis is selling this Holiest of Coffees for $39 a pound, which is a very good price for 100% Jamaican Blue Mountain roasted in a small batch by Roast Magazine’s 2007 Small Batch Roasters of the Year.

My sample is now cool enough to try. Here goes. It has a fine, fine aroma. Smells like freshly ground coffee beans, which is an even better smell than freshly brewed coffee.

Now the sip. Nutty. Crisp. Hints of chocolate. Solid coffee flavor without the slightest hint of burnt/over roasting. To use the words of a Philosophy professor of mine describing Booker’s whiskey, “A Revelation.”
